Amevive Cost

Amevive cost (per one injection) is $1,000. Since one course of Amevive consists of 12 injections, the total price will be $12,000. While most doctors will offer Amevive for $12,000 per course, other doctors may actually double the price, making it $24,000 per course ($2,000 instead of $1,000 per injection). The price of Amevive for a dermatologist is around $600-$800 per injection ($7,000-10,000 per course).

Amevive cost for a patient generally varies depending on the following factors:

- Whether it's an IV or an IM administration (IV will be more involved, and therefore, more expensive).

- Your location.

- Additional costs (the doctor visits, weekly blood lab work, IV supplies, etc.).

Where to find answers to your questions, and how to get a cheaper price for Amevive?

- Call the Amevive hot line at 1-866-AMEVIVE (ask about other dermatologists in your area).

- Do some price shopping (call around).

- Find out if you are eligible for Patient Assistance for Amevive (US program for low-income families) by calling Amevive.

The problem is that most insurers see psoriasis only as a cosmetic condition. However, it's believed that around 90% of the patients will receive some kind of coverage for Amevive. The question is just how much of it will be coverd. For instance, if your insurance covers 90% of the 12-week course that costs $12,000, you will still have to pay 10%, which is $1,200.

Physicians are actually given a 90-day period to pay for the drug, allowing the doctor to collect the money from the insurance company. However, since the reimbursement may be either slow or incomplete, and the drug is so expensive, a dermatologist may end up paying from their pocket and then have to wait for reimbursement. Thus, some derms will not order Amevive until it gets approved from the insurer, which takes time. Other dermatologists will simply not prescribe Amevive.
