Breast Feeding and Psoriasis

Breast Feeding is a process determined by nature itself. Everyone including the World Health Organization, mothers, grandmothers and mothers-in-law "promote" it. But of course that decision is up to the mother.

During the first days the nipples, not accustomed to the breast feeding, may hurt and there may even appear cracks on the nipples.

Hypoallergenic maternity creams with their frequent application will usually rapidly help to relieve the unpleasant symptoms.

After giving birth there occurs another major hormonal shift in a woman.

Statistics on the state of psoriasis during Breastfeeding:

  • 50% - psoriasis during breastfeeding has somewhat aggravated;
  • 37% - psoriasis during breastfeeding has severely aggravated;
  • 13% - psoriasis during breastfeeding has completely disappeared.

Most frequent, psoriasis aggravated again within 2-3 months after giving birth.

BUT! The above statistics are taken from various psoriasis forums, and people usually come to health forums in order to find some kind of health advice for their problem. Therefore these numbers may not be absolute.

Anyway, hormonal shifts sooner or later will pass, and all will return to normal.

Besides the hormones, a mother will be pursued by fatigue, unscheduled diet, intermittent sleep - all of these are psoriasis provoking factors. Hopefully you have the assistance, which will diminish the influence of the non-hormonal provoking psoriasis factors.

So, the breast-feeding...

When psoriasis appears on the breast - this is when the problems begin for a breast feeding woman with psoriasis. How can you treat psoriasis on the breasts and the nipples in order to keep breast-feeding?

Hormonal changes make psoriasis treatment after giving birth practically useless. What is even more important - due to possible negative influence of any medicine on the new-born, any potentially dangerous medicines should be avoided until the end of the breast-feeding period.

Pains and psychological discomfort may often force the mother to much more rapidly stop the breastfeeding.

What is there possible to do to heal your nipples in order to keep breast feeding your newborn?

Here are some thoughts from moms, who have themselves encountered this problem:

  • For itch - try to powder your breasts and nipples with cornstarch, or to put onto the breast and the nipples a bandage with cabbage leaves.

  • Use the Nursing Comfort Balm from the line Mustela 9 Months®. Nursing Comfort Balm, as well as the Ultimate Hydration cream from Mustela are hypoallergenic and may be used during breast-feeding.

  • Some mothers stated that salt baths greatly helped them (2 kg. of salt per 1 bath).

  • In other cases the sun has helped.

  • Some mothers advice to apply Panthenol (Bepanthen) and then to wash it off before nursing the baby.

  • It is also possible to apply oils (olive, cedar etc.).

Certainly, first it is better to try the neutral things like hypoallergenic nursing creams, salt baths, cabbage bandages, the sun etc.

But of course it all depends on the severity of psoriasis.

Only in the severe cases and after consulting with your doctor you may use topical steroids.

Hi Aileen!

Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, there is information about cabbage containing an enzyme that may help reduce the production of milk. However, the same enzyme also seems to be able to soothe sore nipples, and breasts.

I would assume that "cabbage leaf bandages" is a way to try to reduce both psoriasis itch and pain in the breasts and nipples, which may be done sparingly, so that it does not result in the reduction of the mother's milk supply.

Comments from mothers with psoriasis are more than welcome!

I would like to reemphasize that we only provide information, and not give advice. Every individual should consult with their doctor, before doing or not doing anything.

The suggestion of "cabbage leaf bandages" is a concern as cabbages leaves are usually used during times of extreme engorgement and can reduce mother's milk supply. It would be of interest to see comments from mothers who have used these "bandages" and whether this affected their milk production. Thank You.
