1 - (one-time) the purification of the bowels, with a large dose of a purgative, such as, magnesium sulfate. Take not less than 60g of magnesium sulfate, dissolve it in 300 ml of warm water and drink it. With the purification of the stomach and bowels the mechanisms of switching to the valuable internal feeding mode starts faster as well as they help to remove the feeling of hunger. The consuming of a purgative should be done in the evening before the day of fasting. The repeated consumption of a purgative is undesirable since using them for an extended period of time disrupts the ion metabolism in the body, which may lead to nausea and vomiting.
2 - the consumption of water during fasting. In the course of twenty-four hours one should drink not less than two liters of water. If in the case the patient has edemas (excess fluid in body tissues; swelling), the intake of water during the first two days of fasting can be limited to 1 liter.
3 - motion. A person will walk on an average of up to 12 miles (20 km) in the fresh air. Out-of-town walks in the forest or the mountains are preferable. Underweight people when fasting can reduce their walks to 6 miles (10 km) per day. It is desirable at least once a day to work up a sweat with prolonged intensive walking. If the person's skin is dry then it should be lubricated with a natural cream.
4 - various water procedures. One should take a daily shower or bath, using a contrast shower of alternating warm and cold water. Use of a Jet Shower (Massage Shower) also is good. Once a week it is recommended to take a sauna. During water procedures one should not use too much soap.
5 - daily enemas (optional). Approximately twenty-four hours after the purgative therapy, they start introducing water into the rectum (the last 8 to 10 inches of the large intestine) and colon (part of the large intestine, extending to the rectum) via the anus (opening at the end of the rectum where solid waste leaves the body). Each day with the enema (fluid which is put into the rectum to wash out the colon) removed are the fecal masses along with the water, painted yellow with bile. As a result during the period of the fasting - diet therapy the bile secretions along with the bile of the gall bladder are removed, which can frequently contribute to an output through the bowels of small bilious stones and bilious sand. With the presence of gallstone disease it is good to lie down at approximately 7 PM for an hour with a hot-water bottle put on the right side of the stomach. This ensures maximum emptying of the gall bladder.
Enemas are carried out as follows: the "Fountain syringe" (2qt - about 1.89 liters - open-topped enema bag, equipped with a rectal nozzle) is filled up with boiled water and then cooled to room temperature. The enema may be either suspended on a hook or held in the hand and slightly above the person. The tip of the enema is introduced into the rectum (squatted or in the knee-elbow position) and then the clamp is released. As a rule, an enema is followed by taking a shower or a bath.
6 - chest massage and other types of massages and self-massage. In the morning and in the evening for 30 min is carried out the massaging of the upper and lower extremities. Chest massage should be carried out by a masseur-masseuse. During the massage or self-massage it is recommended to use vegetable oils (Olive oil, Chamomile oil, Hunting oil, Lavender oil etc.).
7 - mouth gargling with herbal broths or a soda solution. Gargling should be done before the intake of water. In the majority of cases, the patients during a period of a fasting diet therapy have coated tongues. Pus draining from the maxillary and frontal sinuses, and can have a duration of the first 6-7 days.
8 - in the period of conducting therapeutic fasting it is not recommended to wear synthetic clothing especially in the patients with psoriasis and other dermatitises.
Besides the enumerated methods, patients should also remember the following:
There should be no contact with food during fasting; it will make it harder to abstain from it, and stopping the fast in the wrong way (like just grabbing some hamburger after a couple days of fasting) can actually do harm. After complete fasting for 10-15 days there should be only a diet with juices, then predominantly a vegetable food diet and only after that - the return to a normal diet.
