Below I’ll provide all of the information that I have on fingernail psoriasis treatment. Before I list the treatments, I just want to say that about a year ago I started to improve my diet, and my fingernails have become much better now. My improved diet also helped my scalp, but my body and face stayed the same and didn’t improve at all.
Ok, now the fingernail psoriasis treatments. A suggestion: before using the treatment of your choice, first soak your fingers in water for 10-15 minutes. This will help you to get the treatment to penetrate deeper. Another suggestion: I would pick one treatment and do it once a day for a few weeks, to see if it works. I would apply it before going to bed. (NOTE: I would use gloves after applying the treatment; however, this may not be good for everyone). If it’s a prescription psoriasis medicine, then you need to ask your doctor about the frequency
Following are the finger nail psoriasis treatments you may want to consider. Some are for soaking your fingernails (~15 minutes); others are for rubbing into your fingernails and underneath them for ~3 minutes, and leaving overnight:
Rubbing In:
1. Dovonex / Daivonex cream (people say it works well).
2. Brilliant green plus iodine (it’s hard to wash off but can work well).
3. Salicylic acid ointment.
4. Anthralin ointment.
5. Coal tar creams.
6. Calcineurin inhibitor creams.
7. Dovonex / Daivonex scalp solution (drip under the nails – it’s easy to use).
8. Steroid creams (can thin the fingernails if used for too long).
Soaking In:
1. Castor oil – soak your nails before going to sleep. (Again, I would use gloves, but it may not be good for everyone).
2. Apple cider vinegar – soak your nails.
Psoriasis under fingernails and toenails can show by pitting, detaching, ridging, discoloration, thimble-like point depressions, thickening, rising, and psoriatic nail dystrophy. You can also see splinter hemorrhages – thin small dark lines under the nails caused by popped blood vessels under the finger nails. You can see pictures of fingernail psoriasis here.
It’s estimated that 50% of the people with skin psoriasis also have fingernail psoriasis and/or toenail psoriasis. 30% of nail psoriasis sufferers have nail fungus, and treating it can serve as a psoriasis fingernails treatment. You can request fungus tests from your doctor.
Fingernail psoriasis is very bothersome physically and visually. Visually, men probably have it worse, because women can use nail polish to conceal it. I’m not saying that finger nail psoriasis does not bother women – it bothers them as well. For example, I had to start painting my nails red since I was about 20, when my fingernail psoriasis was triggered by artificial nails. My long artificial nails were catching everything, my real nails started to separate from the finger, and psoriasis started. It was getting worse month by month, year by year.
If you are considering concealing your real nails with artificial ones – be careful not to let them grow too long! Keep them short, or they can make the psoriasis worse underneath the nails. If you have psoriasis elsewhere but not on the fingernails, I would suggest abstaining from artificial nails whatsoever, so that it doesn’t start there, the way it happened to me. Whether you have real or artificial nails – always try to trim them as short as you can, to prevent psoriasis of the fingernails from getting any worse.
I hope this article will help you in your fingernail psoriasis treatment! Good luck!
