Excimer Laser Xtrac

Laser therapy (excimer laser) for Psoriasis and Vitiligo showed its high efficiency and safety.

Laser therapy with the use of an apparatus XTRAC (308 nm)

The advantage of excimer laser XTRAC (308 nm) over the Narrowband UVB lamps is the fact that XTRAC laser is monochromatic, it acts with one wavelength of 308 nanometers accurately into one selected chromophore (part of a molecule responsible for its color), whereas the Narrowband UVB lamps besides the length of 308 nm have an additional spectral of wavelengths from 290 nm to 320 nm, which may be dangerous for the health of a patient.

Due to rapid development of the contemporary technologies together with the Photo-Chemotherapy (PUVA) and Selective Ultraviolet Phototherapy (SUP) there appeared a new type of light-therapy - the use of emission of an excimer Xenon-Chloride (XeCl) laser with the wavelength of 308 nm. One of the mechanisms of the action of such laser with psoriasis appears to be its ability to influence the pathologically changed proliferation (rapid repeated production of new cells) of keratinocytes (skin cell that make up 95% of the outer layer of skin and synthesize keratin). Furthermore, this action is focused, and therefore the potentially harmful irradiation of the healthy skin is excluded.

Narrowband UVB- lamps

With the advent of the UVB laser XeCl-308-nm (XTRAC) it became possible to affect the psoriatic cells more effectively and more safely. Excimer laser XTRAC with the wavelength of 308 nanometers was scientifically researched by American dermatologists for a period of more than 10 years. This laser makes it possible to both stop the autoimmune pathologic processes in skin by causing the destruction of T-lymphocytes, as well as due to the selection of high energy with the short term of emission, (up to 30 nanoseconds) it ensures the evaporation of keratinocytes - the cells of the upper layer of the skin, which are in the unstable division. Furthermore all of the above is achieved without any thermal side-effects.

Treatment by XTRAC is used on patients with psoriasis with skin damage of up to 80%.

The major advantages of XTRAC laser:

  1. A procedure takes just several minutes.
  2. Course of treatment is only 4-10 procedures, compared with 30-40 treatments with regular phototherapy.
  3. There is no additional drug therapy required.
  4. The acting wavelength of the laser - 308 nm - is right in the middle of the best therapeutic wavelength range of 305-311 nm.
  5. The list of counter-indications for laser therapy is less than that for PUVA and UVB phototherapy.
  6. Low cost of treatment.
