Acid / Alkaline Foods

According to Pagano, the diet for people with psoriasis should support correct acid-base balance in the body. The body reactions should be more alkaline than acidic. This depends on the diet and emotional state. Psoriasis patients should remember that their diet should consist of 70-80% of alkali-forming products and 20-30% of acid-forming products.

So which products are alkaline and which are acidic?

Alkali-forming products:

  1. fruits (exception: cranberries, currants, prunes, plums, bilberries):
    • apples, melons and bananas should not be mixed with other products, only as a separate meal,
    • citrus fruits and their juices should not be used together with whole grains and dairy products.
  2. vegetables (exception: beans, rhubarb, pumpkins, Brussels sprouts - in small quantities).
    • From the diet excluded should be all the vegetables of the Solanaceae family: tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, tobacco.

The alkalinity also increases by:

  • adding lecithin to foods and beverages
  • freshly squeezed lemon juice in a glass of hot or cold water
  • juices made from grapes, pears, apricots, mango, pineapples, grapefruits, and oranges
  • fresh and stewed fruits
  • fresh vegetable juices (carrot, celery, beet, parsley, spinach, onion)
  • emptying bowels 1-2 times a day
  • physical exercises
  • positive emotions

Acid-forming products:

These are the products, which contain proteins, starch, sugar, fats and oil, i.e., - meat, grains, cheese, sugar, potatoes, dried peas, beans, oil, cream. Large amounts of such products in the body create acidic reaction in the blood, thus worsening the state of people with psoriasis.

Exclude as much as possible:

  • combination of several acid-forming products within one meal: i.e. starch and sweets, protein and meat, meat or fatty products with sugar or starch
  • sugar and the products that include it
  • vinegar
  • products with preservatives, artificial supplements, dyes etc.
  • alcohol
  • medicine overdose
  • irregular emptying of the bowels, constipation,
  • inactivity (both mental and physical)
  • negative emotions

Actually, Pagano puts "Pumpkin" into the category to eat more of. He lists it as a food that increases alkalinity.
