Alcohol and Psoriasis

Alcohol and Psoriasis? Bad combination...

Alcohol, and especially its frequent use can provoke psoriasis or psoriatic flare ups. This is especially true for beer and champagne (I guess it's the bubbles in them...), as well as strong alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol intoxication contributes to the expansion of psoriasis, complications, frequent flare ups, as well as shortened remissions. People suffering from alcoholism also suffer from a more intensive itch with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is revealed only in 1% of those who do not consume alcohol, and in 5% of those who drink alcoholic beverages. The frequency of psoriasis in chronic alcoholics exceeds 4-7 times the rates of psoriasis among the rest of the population. In about 50% of adults with psoriasis, psoriasis appeared for the first time with a systematic alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse also limits the chances of a successful psoriasis treatment.

So, if you have psoriasis remember: alcohol and psoriasis don't go together... Try to abstain from alcoholic beverages even in small quantities, and especially try to avoid hopfests or anything else that has to do with large amounts of alcohol.

Thank you ALL for comments. I drink way to much and is what directed my questions here. I used Remicade before and it cleared completely. Then not liking needles quit. within six months came back like fire. Dr. then started me on bi- weekly injections of Humira. It worked for a while and now started progressing again. I used to live in Alaska with little daylight or sunshine for parts of the year. I had a UVB light given to me but don't have it anymore. My thoughts after reading these comments are: quit drinking, get another UVB lamp and get my butt to Costa Rica where I am very happy. I don't want pills or injections ??????? Make sense ??

Binge drinking is one of the worst ways to abuse your liver. But after 5 years sobriety now, I'm hoping that my liver has recovered back to its normal self with no lasting damage. Giving up drink was hard, but a worthwhile journey to make.

Hi Xelari!

Thank you for sharing your treatment method!

I think that Daivobet should work well in combination with UVB.

For reference: Daivobet is a drug with calcipotriol – a synthetic analogue of vitamin D. It inhibits psoriasis. Side effects: itching, transient irritation/redness of the skin, inflammation of hair follicles, skin discoloration, skin atrophy and stretch marks (with prolonged use). Also, it inhibits the function of the adrenal cortex.

Perhaps it is best to use it briefly, until psoriasis clears. Then it’s probably best to use UVB alone, without Daivobet. These are just my thoughts...

Good luck! Admin

Ive been suffering with psoriasis the past 4 years, the best treatment for me used to be the uv rays

recently a dr. suggest me to use the cream ¨daivovet¨ during the nights covering after with fill.

so I did, it took 3 nights to go from my arms, n 2 nights from my legs. Im still impress. Of course the white spots r there. n the skin looks like its peeling

hope this can work for someone else

Hi Saurav Singh! Well, I use UVB. It’s not a medication – it’s a special light treatment. I use a small lamp at home for my scalp and face, and visit a medical center for full-body treatments. Good luck!

Hi JOhn Doyle! Congratulations on giving up alcohol and your new regimen!

Hi Jon!

Sorry to hear about your P. flaring up after giving up alcohol...

If giving up was stressful for you, it could have "rubbed your psoriasis the wrong way"...

My suggestion would be to wait and see what happens next, i.e., give it some time.

Have you tried UVB lamps for your psoriasis? It is really helpful, and that's what I use. 1 month of UVB, and you can get rid of most plaques (in my case, it lasts for a few months, but for some people it lasts even longer).

Here are two links with information:

Good luck!

Hi,
I have recently given up alcohol and my psoriasis has flared up rather than the other way round. It was pretty much under control, mainly on head, elbows and shins. Other meds taken at same time of stopping alcohol were: Pabrinex, Librium, Thiamin, Vitamin B12, 300 mg of ranatadine daily and Fluoxotine - ( last drug was started 3 weeks earlier to stopping drinking).

My diet was very bad before stopping drinking, I.E. I hardly ate but am a vegetarian as-well.

Any ideas?
