Alcoholism and Psoriasis

Alcoholism is a genetically predisposed alcohol addiction. Just like some people are predisposed to smoking etc., other people are predisposed to drinking.

Alcoholism develops in the genetically predisposed people after they consume alcoholic beverages for some period of their life.

Simply: Alcoholism = Genetics + Alcohol

Alcoholism is characterized by an intense persistent desire to consume alcohol to excess.

Alcoholism leads to:

  • health problems (i.e. liver problems etc.);
  • physical injuries (i.e. traumas from falling etc.);
  • economic problems (i.e. wasting money on alcoholic beverages);
  • social problems (i.e. in the family, at work etc.);
  • psychological problems (i.e. development of alcohol induced anxiety, depression etc.).

Withdrawal from alcohol leads an alcoholic to severe distress, common in the stoppage of any narcotic mean.

Ethyl Alcohol:

  • according to its taste it is a foodstuff;
  • according to its pharmacological properties it is a general depressor;
  • according to its mood and behavior altering properties it is a toxic narcotic poison.

Toxic narcotic poisons have the ability to create an addiction, a tendency towards an increase in the dosage, and an increase in their tolerance by the body.

Ethanol (type of alcohol in beer, liquors etc., produced by yeast during fermentation of sugars) can damage the functions of endocrine glands and the nervous system and to disrupt the regulation of many metabolic processes and functions of the body.

The frequency of psoriasis among alcoholics is 4-5 times higher, than among the rest of the population. In 55% of people psoriasis for the first time appeared with regular excessive alcohol consumption.

There was conducted a study of 728 people with psoriasis, who also consumed alcohol in excess:

  • In 86% the psoriatic lesions were severely itchy.
  • In 46% psoriasis was accompanied by exudation (the fluids, which are discharged from the inflamed psoriatic lesions) and frequently the damage of large skin folds.
  • In 33% of these people the common seasonality of psoriasis (gets better in the summer and worse in the winter) was lost.
  • The majority of the observed people had more frequent psoriatic aggravations and the continuous expansion of psoriasis.

Alcoholics with psoriasis considerably more frequently develop diabetes-like conditions, indicating the presence of severe carbohydrate metabolism disorders.

Alcoholics often have a very poor diet, and alcohol does not contain any necessary nutrients: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins etc. Therefore alcohol cannot serve as a material for constructing the body cells, including the skin cells.

The excessive alcohol consumption, as a rule, leads to the deficiency of the proteins, minerals and vitamins (especially the B-group vitamins) in the body.

The liver and the brain absorb alcohol the most, which explains the greatest damage of these organs in alcoholics.

People, who consume alcohol in excess, are more predisposed to stress, uneasiness, preoccupation, and anxiety which may lead to the appearance and flare-ups of psoriasis (see Psoriasis Causes - Stress, Mental Trauma and Psoriasis).

Alcoholism also leads to difficulties in the psoriasis treatment.
