Uric Acid May Extend the Lifespan

Antioxidants defend the body against the damage from free radicals.

The body is constantly trying to balance oxidative stress with antioxidants.

Antioxidants protect other body cells (lipids, proteins, DNA) against the damage from free radicals by converting the free radicals into harmless molecules.

The body on its own makes antioxidants like Uric Acid, coenzyme Q-10 and others. Other antioxidants are found in our diet, like vitamins C, E etc.

Various studies suggest that Uric Acid may be one of the major natural antioxidants of the body.

An increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a lowered antioxidant activity have been determined in the psoriatic plaques.

A question: is antioxidant protection lowered in the whole body of the people with psoriasis?

Answer is: people with psoriasis, on the contrary, have an increased antioxidant protection in the rest of their body, with the exception of their psoriatic plaques.

To prove this there was conducted a study, which measured the most well-known antioxidants in the serum of 33 patients with severe psoriasis and in 36 control persons without psoriasis.

In the people with psoriasis several antioxidants (tocopherol and bilirubin) were increased, but only slightly; but an antioxidant Uric Acid was increased by a whole 33% compared to the controls without psoriasis.

Other parameters such as total protein and thiol content and ascorbic acid did not differ from controls.

High levels of Uric Acid can prevent the oxidative stress, connected with the aging, thus extending the lifespan of a human (Ames BN, Cathcart R, Schwiers E, Hochstein P. Uric Acid provides an antioxidant defense in humans against oxidant- and radical-caused aging and cancer: a hypothesis. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1981;78:6858-62.).

CONCLUSION 5:

High levels of Uric Acid may cause an extension of the lifespan of the people with psoriasis, compared to the people without psoriasis.

Therefore the people with psoriasis may live longer than the people without psoriasis.

For all of the above, people with psoriasis often pay with their psoriatic plaques.

Exceptions compose the people with the so-called "concealed psoriasis" - i.e. no visual psoriasis manifestations, and with only the internal deviations. Such people may be the really lucky ones - i.e., they may possess all of the above benefits with no disadvantages of having psoriasis on the skin or joints in the case of a psoriatic arthritis.

My grandaughter,12, recently got guttate psoriasis from strep throat the doctor says. 2 weeks later my daughter got the strep and she also developed the psoriasis only not as bad. My grandaughter has over her entire body. My daughter only has it on her arms and legs. My grandaughter is on a lot of expensive drugs plus uv treatment and nothing is helping. I sell healthy chocolate, xocai, and I told my daughter that I had heard that healthy chocolate because of its high antioxidants was good for psoriasis but had no proof. I gave them a box to try and after a few days my daughter had all but cleared up but my grandaughters had not changed. My daughter said the only difference was that she was eating the chocolate and my grandaughter was hit and miss.My grandaughter started eating it regularly and her face cleared up. THey ran out of chocolate and did'nt tell me and now it is back on my grandaughters face and back on my daughters arms and legs. They called this morning wanting more chocolate because they are sure now that it works. We will see as I am taking them a box tonight. Dark chocolate, acai berry and flax are the ingredients, very high in antioxidants and omega 3.

Hi Harry!

Maybe it's not related to uric acid.. Maybe it's something else in us...

Anyway, I think it's a blessing, which we fully deserve :)

All the itching and scales, but at least we look young for our years!

Hi Gina !

I have now learned for a fact that it has to do with the diet. I have started to eat less of the bad stuff, more vegetables, and drink more water each day, and I see my scalp, nails and toenails clearing up!

My diet is similar to Weight Watchers, but without counting points and weighing the food. I just do it by eye.

It's not enough to clear P. on my body, but oh well. It's better than nothing :)

Interesting stuff. I have psoriasis and definitely look young for my years. But my uric acid count is normal. However I do occasionally get kidney stones, but not uric acid -- they are calcium oxalate/phosphate.

Hi Gintare!

Yep, isn't it amazing? We do have some benefits after all :D

I hope it's true too, and it seems to make sense (high uric acid levels and all that stuff).

I also have a good health, good memory, and good skin, where it isn't affected :)

Anyway, I find it pleasant to think that we might be an "evolutionary experiment" in search for a better adopted human being LOL

Thanks for your comment, and good luck!

Wow! Thanks for the info! For a long time I was wondering if there's any benefit from having a psoriasis, despite all the inconveniences? And here it is! The saving article! I really hope it's true what you wrote. I do have a good health despite the psoriasis. And I can say that my memory is very good as well as marks on the exams, though I am a lazy person who doesn't really reads a lot. ;D
Thank you once again!

Hi, Mel!

Thanks a lot for your comment!

Wow, may it be yet another psoriasis benefit?

I totally agree with you. In fact, I have never met or heard of anyone with psoriasis and cancer. It must be really rare.

Unfortunately, people with severe psoriasis are frequently treated with immunosuppressant drugs, which are linked to an augmented risk of lymphoma (usually malignant type of cancer originating in lymph cells of the immune system). But that's not a psoriasis fault, that's the fault of immunosuppressants!

Thus, if a person with psoriasis does not receive treatment with immunosuppressants, we seem to actually have a lower risk of cancer! (except for an easy to treat skin cancer, that is).

Great comment, thank you!

I read somewhere that psoriasis was considered a non fatal cancer - due to the reproduction of cells. I've always pondered on the possibility that as psoriasis sufferers actually live a life time with this non-fatal cancer and yet do not die from it - maybe we are more immune to the other types of cancer?

Just a thought, but I've never heard of anyone with psoriasis develop cancer (other than maybe skin cancer from crazy amounts of UV exposure). That would be pretty interesting to look into ..

Good work on the site, I found it very informative!

Hello, June!

Thank you very much for a wonderful comment!

It's amazing, isn't it?

I mean, we have so much trouble with our scales and lesions, but we seem to have some other benefits, don't we!

It's just my assumption, but still...

Anyway, I have decided to make a Poll on this topic, and hopefully soon we will see if people with psoriasis do hear a lot about being healthier, younger looking, smarter, with a better physique etc.

Also thank you for sharing information about the aloe vera gel (straight from the plant). I will try to give it a try as soon as I can. Maybe aloe vera does have some amazing healing properties, just like the legends and tales say!

I hope that you'll become a regular Psoriasis-Aid.com visitor!

Best Regards!

I found your article very interesting. I have suffered with psoriasis for over 40 yrs now and remember when I was younger I went to give blood and the doctor said something along the lines of "psoriasis sufferers are always so damn healthy" and true enough, had next to nothing wrong with me until about 10 yrs ago when I started to show signs of high blood pressure. Your article has put all this into a more technical frame for me. Also I tried aloe vera gel (straight from the plant) for several weeks at end of last year and the places where I used it have next to no plaque now, just look a bit dry and pale compared to the tan on the rest of my arms ( I live in Spain) I have to be careful as the patches dry up or burn more easily in the sun than the rest of my ams, but it is infinitely better than before.
Thank you for interesting article.
