Hormones and Psoriasis Theory

Hormones and Psoriasis seem to be tightly connected. Psoriasis is characterized by an increased reproduction of the epidermal skin cells, which indicates the disorders of the Regulatory Endocrine System.

Endocrine System regulates the body organ's activity with the aid of the hormones. Hormones are produced in the endocrine glands. Endocrine System produces various hormones, for example Steroid hormones (i.e. Glucocorticoids - Cortisone, HydroCortisone, Corticosterone, Prednisolone; Sex Hormones etc.). Together with the Nervous System and the Immune System, Endocrine System regulates the growth and the development of an organism, sex differentiation, reproductive functions etc.

Is psoriasis connected with the endocrine glands disorders, in particular - the thyroid and adrenal glands disorders?

Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that produces thyroid hormones to regulate the body's metabolism and growth. Deviations in the thyroid gland functions are found in many people with psoriasis (see Thyroid Psoriasis).

Adrenal gland is an endocrine gland that produces the hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline, glucocorticoids (i.e. cortisone), sex hormones and others. Adrenal gland regulates metabolism, sexual function, water balance, heart rate, blood pressure, and stress.

In the majority of the people who had psoriasis for a long time, there is revealed a reduction in the glucocorticoid function of the outer region of the adrenal gland - the adrenal cortex, i.e. the production of the Steroid hormones is disrupted.

In psoriasis treatment used are Topical Steroids which cause blood vessels in the epidermis to temporary constrict and thus to achieve an anti inflammatory effect with psoriasis. Topical Steroid hormones possess various side-effects.

There are known cases of the appearance and flare-ups of psoriasis in women at the time of menstruation. It is also known that psoriasis may disappear during pregnancy and reappear during breast feeding. The above clearly indicates the connection of hormonal changes with psoriasis.

However, a direct connection of any particular endocrine gland or hormone with psoriasis was not found. The presence of endocrine disorders in people with psoriasis does not allow asserting that these disorders are the direct cause for the appearance of psoriasis, because similar disorders are also observed with other illnesses.

Further research has to be conducted in order to understand better the connection of psoriasis with the disorders of the hormone production by the Regulatory Endocrine System.

I believe psoriasis is hormonal also. I have been dealing with it since the birth of my son, six years ago. I never had it before then.

I have adrenal insufficiency and have been on Cortef for just over 2 years. I take 10 mg a day, and if stressed (enviroment or even cold) I take 20 mg. Now I have psoriasis all over my legs and arms/elbows. I believe the two are related. I plan on getting off Cortef and taking a nature cortisol extract. I see an endocrinologist but don't see my cortisol levels getting better (usually between 1 or 2, up to 3 once in the last 2 yrs).

Interesting, I had never had psoriasis until I had my hysterectomy either and had never connected them til now! I am on bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. I have psoriasis on my palms and lower back, coal tar ointments, like Psoriaicin are the only thing that help so far.

Hi Candice! Thank you very much for sharing. I have never taken birth control pills, but this is definitely something to look into. I will write an article about “birth control and psoriasis”, and maybe other people will share their experiences with comments as well. All the best!

Hi Pat! I’m so happy that you found a treatment that works for you. I will incorporate this information into my new article.

I have had psoriasis since puberty, so I have always figured it was hormone related. I didn't realize this at the time, but I when I started taking birth control it help control the psoriasis (I used to get it on the back of my right ear and it went away after BC). I just recently stopped taking BC and now the psoriasis is back on my ear. Very interesting....

Although my sister had psorisis from a young age, I had none, until I had hysterectomy in my early 40's. And then I was Premerin. When I went off of premerin psorisis came on like gangbusters. Recenetly, I have had premerin treatments for incontenence. My elbows are clearing and my knees are free of psorisis. I have always felt that is hormanal, and this treatment to me is proof that is the cause and the solution.

Hello Patty!

Maybe a pinched nerve had some kind of effect on your sexuality?

And then psoriasis appeared as a result of emotional tension at the time of your marriage problems?

Anyway, keep looking and I am sure that some day you will find an answer to your question!

Wishing you all the best!
