3 Psoriasis Stages

There are 3 main Psoriasis Stages:

  1. Progressive Stage;
  2. Stationary Stage;
  3. Regressive Stage.

Progressive Stage of Psoriasis

In the Progressive Stage there appear new psoriatic lesions, which merge with one another and form plaques of different forms and sizes. The color of the lesions is more intense. The lesions in this stage are not completely covered with scales. The centers of the plaques are covered with scales, but around them remain free from the scales red rim, which testifies about the growth of the plaques.

The skin of the people with psoriasis in the Progressive Stage can be supersensitive. There is present the Koebner's phenomena - the appearance of new lesions on the spots of a skin trauma (scratches, bites, pricks, cuts, burns, friction etc.).

In the Progressive Stage one should not use irritating therapeutic means, frequent baths, and even ultraviolet light. In the Stationary and Regressive periods the above means can be successfully used, whereas in the Progressive Stage they can cause flare-ups and even the development of Psoriatic Erythroderma.

Stationary Stage of Psoriasis

Stationary Stage usually begins in 1-4 weeks after the Progressive Stage.

In the Stationary Stage the new lesions do not appear, the red rim around the plaques disappears, the lesions become completely covered with silvery white scales, which indicates the curtailment of their further growth.

Regressive Stage of Psoriasis

In the regressing stage the infiltration, redness and the peeling of psoriatic plaques decrease, around the elements it is possible to see a narrow pale rim of pseudo-atrophy - tender 2-7 mm folding (pseudo-atrophic rim; Woronoff, 1926).

The elements become thinner; they are freed from the scales and gradually dissipate, leaving only the sections of a temporary hyper-pigmentation (darker color). The skin around where previously there were plaques acquires hypo-pigmentation (pale color).

This stage may completely clear the skin from psoriasis or sometimes to only leave the on-duty plaques on the elbows and knees.

Sometimes Remission is considered the 4th Stage of Psoriasis. During the remission the skin completely clears from psoriasis.
