Psoriasis Statistics

Psoriasis Statistics are overwhelming. At present there are approximately 3,000 different dermatitises. Surveys and research show that psoriasis is one of the most frequent of them.

Psoriasis Statistics by General Population

The frequency of psoriasis in the general population varies from 0.1% to 8%.

According to psoriasis stats from various resources, about 2-3% of the general population on the Planet Earth suffers from psoriasis. Approximately 120 - 180 million people suffer from psoriasis!

Psoriasis statistics presented below are approximate numbers taken from different sources.

Psoriasis Statistics by Countries

  • Scandinavia - 7-8%
  • Denmark - 5-6%
  • Germany - 4%
  • USA - 2-3%
  • Canada - 2-3%
  • Russia - 2-3%
  • Northern Europe - 2-3%
  • Great Britain - 2%
  • China - 0.37%
  • Kuwait - 0.11%

For example: Canada - more than 1 million people, Great Britain - more than 1 million, Scandinavian countries - 2 million, France - 2 million and the, U.S.A. - 7 million.

It is interesting to note that the more developed the country, the higher is the percentage of people with psoriasis. In the most developed countries about 4% of the population suffers from psoriasis. Exceptions are Japan and Australia.

There are places on Earth, where psoriasis is VERY RARE. For example, in Japan and China psoriasis is encountered in less than 1%.The same is true with psoriasis in the Eskimos and American Indians.

In the countries of North America, England, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden psoriasis reaches 3- 5%, while in the countries of South America, Africa, Australia there are only rare cases of psoriasis reported.

Psoriasis Statistics by Locations

Statistical data shows that psoriasis is more frequent in regions with moderate and cold climates, and it is less frequent in the tropical countries.

In rural areas the frequency of psoriasis is usually 3-4 times less than in the urban areas.

Psoriasis Statistics by Age

Who gets psoriasis more often: children, adults or elderly people? Here are the stats:

Psoriasis can develop at anytime from a baby up to an elderly age. In one rare case a poor baby of 1.5 months old developed psoriasis...

But most frequently psoriasis manifests prior to age 30, which are 3/4 of all the people with psoriasis.

Frequently psoriasis begins in the period of puberty (13-15 years of age). Scientists connect it with the process of the hormonal reconstruction of the body.

Statistically there are two age peaks, when psoriasis is the most probable to begin: 13-25 y/o or 50-60 y/o.

The greatest risk to develop Psoriatic Arthritis is at the age of 30-50 y/o (more than 70%).

Psoriasis Statistics by Gender

In childhood girls get psoriasis a bit more often, and in adults men get psoriasis a bit more often.

But on the whole psoriasis is equally common in both - males and females.

Psoriasis Statistics by Relatives

The relatives, who suffer or who suffered with psoriasis are revealed in 30-60% of the people with psoriasis.

If parents without psoriasis have a child who has psoriasis, then the probability of psoriasis development in their other children will be about 17%.

If one of the parents has psoriasis, the possibility of their children to develop psoriasis will be about 25%.

If both parents have psoriasis, the possibility of their children to develop psoriasis will be 60-75%

The children, in whom one of the parents has psoriasis, get psoriasis approximately 4 times more frequently than the children of parents without psoriasis.

Psoriasis Statistics by Psoriasis Type

Plaque Psoriasis (aka Psoriasis Vulgaris) is the most common type of psoriasis, which is encountered in about 80% of people with psoriasis.

Psoriatic Arthritis is encountered in about 5-30% of psoriasis sufferers.

Pustular Psoriasis is encountered in less than 5% of psoriasis sufferers.

Psoriasis of the Mucous Membranes is encountered in 1-2% of people with psoriasis.

Psoriasis Statistics Tendencies

According to contemporary statistical data, psoriasis prevalence increases. This can be partially explained by pollution, by an increase in the pace of life, by stress etc.

In the last 15-25 years there was an increase in the number of people with the severe disabling Psoriasis Types (Pustular Psoriasis, Erythrodermic Psoriasis, and Psoriatic Arthritis), resistant to any therapy.

In the last 15-25 years there was an increase in the number of people when psoriasis appeared at a younger age (the earlier psoriasis begins, the more heavily it flows).

In the last 15-25 years there was an increase in the number of people when psoriasis is combined with the diabetes, atherosclerosis, gastritis, stomach ulcer, cirrhosis of the liver, neurosis, and obesity.

Psoriasis Versus Other Dermatitises

The number of the people with psoriasis among people with other skin diseases composes 2%-10% (in France for example it's about 4%). Number of hospitalized people with psoriasis is about 6%-22%.

Other Psoriasis Stats

Approximately 60% of people with psoriasis also have a disrupted carbohydrate metabolism.

Approximately 10% of people with psoriasis also have the skin of the palms and soles affected.

The risk to develop psoriasis in the course of ones entire life statistically is about 2-3%.
