I’ve determined that gluten, yeast, and flour worsen the state of my psoriasis (especially nails and scalp). So, I will talk about psoriasis and gluten, yeast, and flour in this article. Even though it is hard to do away with certain common foods, it can be truly worth it for those with psoriasis.
I have had psoriasis on my scalp and nails for many years. About a year ago, I started on a diet to lose some weight. It was a WeightWatchers type diet, where you can eat anything up to a certain number of points. The points are calculated based on calories and fat, so you try to pick the foods with the least amount of fat and calories, to eat more in terms of the amount. As the result, I was eating much less bread, pasta, cookies, cakes, and other foods that contain gluten, yeast, and wheat flour.
Prior to starting on the diet, my psoriasis was quite bad, especially on the scalp, fingernails, and toenails. My body was bad as well, but this is manageable with a UVB course that I undertake once or twice a year. My fingernails and toenails do not respond to UVB; scalp responds only if I use a UVB brush.
In a few months of the diet, I started to notice an improvement of psoriasis on my nails – both, fingernails and toenails. I also started to notice an improvement on my scalp. Months went by, and my nails and scalp kept getting better – they were almost perfect.
In some time, I started to go off of the diet, because I was happy with my weight and started to miss cake, etc. It did not take long for my psoriasis to strike back – in just a few weeks my nails and scalp started to get worse right before my eyes. My nails also started to hurt.
As soon as I noticed the worsening, I eliminated all flour products from my diet again. And again, in a matter of a very short time my scalp and nails started to improve. Now, I don’t eat anything made with wheat, except for rare cases when I can eat a piece of pizza or a cake (about once a weak). Now, my nails and scalp are basically perfect.
So, it does make sense to look into the foods that we eat. In my case, it was psoriasis and gluten / yeast / flour. In someone else’s case, it may be dairy or sugar. The goal is to find the culprit and eliminate it from your diet. This is better than diets that call to eliminate all potential culprits at once.
