Genital Psoriasis

Genital Psoriasis is psoriasis located in the groin and genital area. In most cases Genital Psoriasis is also accompanied by psoriasis elsewhere but in rare cases it may locate in the genital area only. In this case it may make it hard to make a correct diagnosis and the symptoms may be confused with contact dermatitis, yeast infections in the skin folds (intertrigo) etc.

Affected areas look red, moist and shiny. They may range from small spots to large patches. Genital Psoriasis does not have the usual abundant white-silvery scaling (with the exception of the spots located on the pubic area and the buttocks). Genital Psoriasis is usually itchy because it is located in a very sensitive area, but it is usually not too sore.

In the worst cases Genital Psoriasis may feel tight and sore, it may split and crack. If this sensitive area is irritated by scratching, it may become infected. In the event of vigorous scratching of psoriasis in the area of the buttocks and genital area it may become sore.

Inverse Psoriasis (psoriasis located in the skin folds) is most common to appear in the genital region.

Genital Psoriasis Symptoms may appear on the: pubic area; upper thighs next to the groin; skin between the thigh and the groin; genitals (the vulva, for women; the penis and scrotum, for men); skin between the anus and vulva or anus and scrotum, and the skin around the anus; skin between the buttocks.

Psoriasis located on the genitals themselves is considerably uncomfortable due to that genitals have a lot of nerve endings.

In men Genital Psoriasis may affect the penis, the scrotum, the pubic area, the buttocks and between the buttocks. Penile Psoriasis usually appears as many small, red patches on the tip of the penis or the penis shaft. The skin is usually smooth and shiny and sometimes also scaly. Penile Psoriasis affects both circumcised and uncircumcised males.

In women Genital Psoriasis may affect the outside skin of the vulva, the pubic area, buttocks and between the buttocks. Psoriasis of the vulva often appears as smooth not scaly red patches. Scratching can produce dryness, thickening of the skin and more itching.

Genital Psoriasis usually affects the outer skin of the genitals. Mucous membranes, such as the vagina or the urethra (the canal through which urine is expelled from the body) are usually not affected.

Genital Psoriasis is often triggered by underwear (especially tight-fitting underwear) rubbing against the skin. People who move a lot (i.e. athletes) or sweat a lot sometimes have their Genital Psoriasis worse and itchier.

Anal Psoriasis (psoriasis located on or near the anus) is red, itchy and usually not scaly. Anal Psoriasis symptoms may be confused with yeast and fungal infections, hemorrhoid itching, strep infections and even pin worm infestations. A rectal examination will help a doctor to make a correct diagnosis. Symptoms of Anal Psoriasis include bleeding, pain during bowel movements, and excessive itching.
