Genital psoriasis may occur on the labia, the penis and the scrotum.
Genital psoriasis is usually not scaly or flaky, but red and itchy.
Genital psoriasis treatment may include mild topical steroids, but steroids eventually will cause the skin to thin. Genital skin is naturally thin; therefore it might be better to use non-steroid ointments for genital psoriasis treatment, such as Protopic, Elidel and Dovonex. UVB phototherapy will usually also help fast and well.
Using a moisturizer prior sex may help to soothe the skin around the genitalia and to help the itching for both - men and women.
Men and women using psoriasis creams on their genitals should wash the medication off prior to sexual intercourse; psoriasis medications may adversely affect your partner, if they get inside the vagina or inside the urethra.
Penile psoriasis is usually the most uncomfortable and painful type of the genital psoriasis.
The friction your penis experiences during sex may cause pain, discomfort and to aggravate your penile psoriasis.
What can be done about Penile Psoriasis?
Wearing a condom when having sex, and even when masturbating, may make you more comfortable if you have psoriasis on your penis.
Apply a lubricant prior to applying the condom. The condom will keep the skin lubricated, prevent the skin from becoming more inflamed and make sex less painful.
Note: that most condoms can get damaged by oil-based substances (e.g. baby oil), rendering the condom unsafe. However, Durex has a condom called Avanti, claimed to be safe for use with oil-based substances.
If for some reason you don't use condoms, applying a lubricant when having sex might also make you feel more comfortable.
