Treatment by Forms

Psoriasis treatment should adhere to the following:

  1. Treatment must lead to a prolonged remission.
  2. Treatment must lead to rapid results in order to support the confidence of a patient.
  3. External topical treatment must be based on the conventional components, action of which was proven in vivo

Psoriasis treatment methods include:

  1. Medicinal therapy
  2. Phototherapy and PUVA-therapy
  3. Topical therapy
  4. Climatotherapy
  5. Alternative methods

Unfortunately, many of the contemporary therapies are fraught with different complications - starting with vomiting and itch and as severe as damage to the kidneys and oncologic damage of the skin. However, the main deficiency of the contemporary psoriasis treatment methods is their incapacity to completely free the patient from the disease. The contemporary psoriasis treatment can only reduce skin manifestations to a minimum, without fixing the thus far unknown pathogenic factors of psoriasis.

The mechanisms for the development of psoriasis are complex and insufficiently known; therefore thus far there doesn’t exist a united effective treatment regimen for psoriasis. With the designation of a treatment for people that have psoriasis the doctor considers the form of the psoriatic rash (its usual flow, wet lesions, their elevation above the level of the skin, the infiltration), the sights of psoriatic lesions, stage of the disease, age, sex, the presence any associated diseases and counter-indications to one or another treatment or medicine.

Among the medicines, used for treating people with psoriasis, key elements are vitamins, hormones, immunomodulators, and cytostatics (agents that suppress the growth and multiplication of cells).

Treatment can be carried out by a local action on the skin, by systematic (internal) or a combination.

In the progressive stage the means of a sedative action are frequently prescribed to the patient. These are the solutions, which contain sodium bromide or potassium, as well as Valerian, Motherwort (Throw-wort, Lion's Ear, Lion's Tail) etc.

As a whole the contemporary treatment regimens consist of the following:

  1. with the mild, limited forms of psoriasis - correction of the provoking factors and topical therapy;
  2. with the moderate forms of psoriasis - systemic therapy (hypo-sensitizing, detoxifying, correction of the disorders of micro-circulation), phototherapy with UVB (narrow spectrum rays);
  3. with the severe or resistance forms of psoriasis - one of three main medicines - Methotrexate, Neotigason, Ciclosporin - for the general treatment, depending on the counter-indications.

Ultraviolet (UV) light both from the sun and from the artificial sources, is usually successful. Under common weather conditions people cannot rely on the sunlight year round; therefore it is necessary to use an artificial light. The most useful Ultraviolet light for people with psoriasis is short-waves. This type of light is not used in ordinary tanning salons (solariums).

Ultraviolet rays are sometimes combined with a topical treatment, applying tar ointments and taking tar baths for the psoriasis treatment.
